Macrons not working in emails?

Some email products are not good at handling macrons. Some popular products can't display macrons at all and render them as quite different characters, making the text unreadable. When kupu.maori.nz knows that particular sets of email addresses can't render macrons, it sends them as umlauts instead, i.e., ä, ë, ï, ö and ü. While this is not ideal, it makes the best it can of the mail system you are using. If you are receiving unreadable characters, please email kaitiaki@kupu.maori.nz and let us know so that we can change it to send umlauts. Of course, this will only fix it for messages you receive from He Kupu o te Ra, or rather, He Kupu o te Rā.

Some email products that work well with macrons

Gmail handles macrons well - in the subject line and the body of the message. Microsoft Outlook 2003 and 2007, Thunderbird and Lotus Notes 6.5 work well too. Outlook Express 6 doesn't display macrons in the subject line until you open the message, but otherwise works well.

There are probably many good products available, and please tell us if you know of a product that we should add to this list.

Also see information on keyboard setup to allow you to type macrons in emails and in other programs.
